Description

Micheline Bernardini wearing the first bikini, 1946. Caption: The new 'Bikini' swimming costume (in a newsprint-patterned fabric), which caused a sensation at a beauty contest at the Molitor swimming pool in Paris. Designer Louis Réard was unable to find a 'respectable' model for his costume and the job of displaying it went to 19-year-old Micheline Bernardini, a nude dancer from the Casino de Paris. She is holding a small box into which the entire costume can be packed. Celebrated as the first bikini, Luard's design came a few months after a similar two-piece design was produced by French designer Jacques Heim.

Purpose of use

Educational. Bernardini was a stripper who was hired to pose in the first bikini because no reputable model would do it. This photograph plays an irreplaceable part in her career biography, and, in fact, is the reason she is notable at all. To have an article about her without this photo is unthinkable.

Purpose of use

Educational. The bikini was a revolutionary garment, so much so that no reputable model would wear it for a photo shoot, so a stripper was hired. The fact that the bikini has become so mundane a part of our existence is an important cultural statement, and what establishes that is the beginning of the bikini (i.e. the garment worn in the photo) and its history thereafter. Once again, an article about the bikini without a photo of the very first bikini is unthinkable.

Purpose of use

Educational. The bikini as a garment has gone through numerous evolutionary changes, some of which have branched off in different directions. What establishes this is the "base" version of the bikini, as shown in this iconic picture. It provides "point zero" for comparison of the bikini variants discussed in the article.
